Collection: Butternut

Butternut, Juglans cinerea, is an American species also known as White Walnut. The Butternut tree looks very similar to American Walnut, growing to heights of 60-100 ft. tall. The wood works easily with hand and power tools, gluing and finishing well. Butternut is slightly less dense than Walnut at .36 to .43 specific gravity and can have fuzzy surfaces after being worked; sharp tools will reduce this tendency. The color is generally warm with honey-tan tones and reddish streaks. Typically Butternut trees are not milled for their lumber as the fruit is more valuable, producing wonderful flavor in baked goods and maple-butternut candy.
